Alberto Gonzales, the Hispanic who has achieved the highest position in the US government, old time George W. Bush’s friend, is again under fire. There are more and more requests for his dismissal. It’s like his friendship with Bush doesn’t let him have an impartial view of justice. Not to mention his opinions, recommendations, or rulings regarding the suppression of habeas corpus, the techniques of information extraction—torture, the searches on peoples’ information, the extraordinary renditions of suspects—to countries were torture is practiced, their indefinite detention, the disregard for the Geneva Conventions, the limitations of the Freedom Information Act, the support for military tribunals… the record number of executions when he was Bush legal adviser in Texas.
¿Qué ha pasado con los pilares legales de una sociedad justa?
What’s happened with the legal foundations of an honest society?
Gonzales symbolizes different contradictions: he is a Republican in favor of affirmative action, he is a catholic who doesn’t oppose abortion, he is a pro-immigration conservative. He holds the highest position in the judiciary and maybe his parents and/or grandparents were illegal immigrants.
Gonzales is a Hispanic who has achieved success socially, politically, and monetarily. Other role-models are to be found regarding the ethical side of life.
Here an open letter from religious leaders asking Gonzales to condemn and oppose torture.
